Good Enough For Anyone But Me

The Revelations, "You're The Loser" - I consider it somewhat of a miracle that I beat Matthew to this one; it's such a prototypical Fluxblog song that I'm surprised they didn't shout him out. All the promotional material for this single compares it to Johnny Boy's (immensely awesome) "You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve", which I suppose is correct if you swap out Johnny Boy's Wall of Sound for a heaping helping of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Unfortunately it seems to have had exerted about the same degree of influence as Johnny Boy; the single's about two weeks old and it seems to have disappeared from the earth. This seems to be the fate of a lot of these revivalist pop songs - outside of Girls Aloud's magnificent "Love Machine", they seem to fizzle and die before they can even get started. To quote a noted sage: this is everybody's fault except mine. (Click here to visit the Fierce Panda site and buy the "You're The Loser" single.)

Colored Shadows, "Eyes" - So apparently people be bemoanin' the slow fade into oblivion of the physical music product since now you can get everything on That Thar Internet no-how. I'm not even going to pretend like I don't discover most of my music from the net, of course, but to say that brick-and-mortar stores have nothing left to offer is frankly just retarded, and I wave the first Colored Shadows EP over my head frantically to underscore my point. I can guarantee you that if I'd heard about this album online instead of stumbling over it randomly in Amoeba, it would have been in the form of a long-winded review featuring the phrases "lush synths", "swirling" "shoegaze", "My Bloody Valentine", and a general overreliance on incredibly tortured similes, and I would have (quite rightly) clicked on back in disgust. Thank God the strikingly contrasting cover design (my actual CD has foil where all the non-white space is) caught my eye; reading the employee blurb card sitting by it, I became more interested in how they'd fill that space on the album and lucked into buying a damn good younger cousin of Moon Safari. Thank god I get to try to sell you on it with an MP3 instead of words. (Click here to buy the Colored Shadows EP from CDbaby, and check out their site to hear clips of their other songs.)

Elsewhere: Chris Dahlen brings the kickassness AGAIN in his latest installment of Get That Out Of Your Mouth. And speaking of PF, hopefully I don't need to sell anyone on Dave Stelfox's indispensible monthly guide to dancehall - really, all the monthly guides are great, but his may be the pick of the litter.

Back on Monday with more stuff - GODDAMMIT PICCADILLY, GIMME GIMME GIMME.
