I Can Tell That Your Father Don't Like Me

Spiv, "Oh You Beautiful Child" - Although I'm not usually one for glam rock - Roxy Music's Country Life and pre-Berlin Bowie make an awful lot of stuff obsolete - I couldn't resist Glitter From The Litter Bin, a compilation spotlighting a wide range of great glam songs otherwise consigned to history. It's probably not the hugest shock in the world that most of my favorite songs off the comp are the ones that aspire to the heights of Bay City Rollers or ABBA greatness (as opposed to tedious old Slade or Sweet greatness), such as "Oh You Beautiful Child", whose ferocious stomp (easily crossfadeable out of "20th Century Boy") can't hide the giddy poptimist glee coursing through that snotty melody. But there really is something for everyone - power pop fans will flip out over the Jook, fans of general weirdness will probably get a kick out of Edwina Biglet & the Miglets, and fans of glam in general - well, you know what to do. Like I said, I like this, and this isn't even stuff I like. (Click here to buy Glitter From The Litter Bin from Amazon.co.uk)

Who Made Who, "Flat Beat" - Seeing as how Who Made Who are starting to get some good press, it only seems fitting to post what I consider far and away their most fun song. The problem with dancepunk is that when it went legit, it, er, went legit, and all of a sudden what used to be a signifier for a bunch of dudes having a bunch of fun wailing on a bunch of guitars and drums and bells and such became an unbelievably dire Aesthetic, turning me into an incredibly sour old man towards it in the process. As you can imagine, I welcomed Who Made Who with open arms, although it helped enormously that most of the first songs I heard off them were covers of preposterous house music from the late 1990s, like this cowbell'd-up-like-a-muh cover of Mr. Oizo's "Flat Beat". There's a certain irreverance to these covers sorely lacking on their album (which is, in all fairness, quite good, just in a boy-this-album-rules-my-iPod's-shuffle-function manner); they sound like they're actually having a giant wad of fun playing these songs, and that's exactly the reason why people run to the floor for "House Of Jealous Lovers" like kids at summer camp do for "YMCA" while all those laborious !!! dirges gather dust.
